The year is now 2019, and with any year come anniversaries, and the year of 2019 is chock-full of 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th, and 50th anniversaries; But today, I would very much like to shine the spotlight on the certain things that are turning 100 in the year of 2019(HINT: They include a certain annual event that takes place in the first state of Delaware every year, and NO, it is NOT the Dover Comic Con!). Let’s take a look, shall we?
The UCLA, or University of California, Los Angeles: This wonderful college in the Golden State also happens to be a public research university, not to mention being the second-oldest undergraduate campus of the 10-campus university system, after UC Berkeley.
“Ripley’s Believe it or Not!”: Well, believe it or don’t, when Robert Ripley began his cartoon feature on December 19th, 1918, it had been originally named Champs and Chumps, featuring feats that have to do with sports; After adding unrelated items, the name was then changed to Believe it or Not in October of 1919.
Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company: This candy-making division, one that is within the Hershey Company, was founded in 1919 in New Haven, Connecticut; The company was best known for its Mounds Bar as well as the Almond Joy (“Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut, Sometimes You Don’t!”), but it also introduced other candy bars that would later not ever see the light of day, such as the (Peanut Butter with) No Jelly Bar, later called the Peanut Butter Bar, which discontinued in 1979.
United Artists: Yes, that certain film company that has given us such wonderful movie memories as Marilyn Monroe singing jazz while Jack Lemmon is in drag, Inspector Clouseau chasing after the Pink Panther and Rocky climbing up the steps of the Art Museum in Philadelphia is turning the big 100 this year…
RCA: The famed electronics corporation shall be blowing out 100 candles this year; The company is perhaps best known for its mascot, a dog by the name of Nipper, and its slogan, “His Master’s Voice”.
Foster Grant: Have you or perhaps your grandparents ever wear those Foster Grants? Well, it is a pretty good chance that they did, because that eyewear company, known for its famous specs worn by the likes of those such as Cindy Crawford, is turning 100 in this year of 2019 (Wow, that may be a LOT of Foster Grants!)
The Delaware State Fair: The first state’s annual summer celebration of all things that truly make Delaware what it is, will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in July; It has been drawing crowds from the rest of the first state, as well as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.
